Troubleshooting Blackberry and Netgear, Curve 8900 Wi-Fi/UMA Connection with NETGEAR Wireless Router

in Blackberry

blackberry curve 8900I’ve been trying to connect a Blackberry Curve 8900 to a Netgear RangeMax wireless router. The router has 64bit WEP encryption set and I have no problems connecting any of my other wireless network devices. If I go through the Wi-Fi setup on the Blackberry, it finds my network, I select it, insert the correct key, it tries to connect and then says the following:  W002 – Wi-Fi Connection Failed, Meaning: The phone was unable to get an IP address from the DHCP server in order to establish a connection.

netgear max rangeSo I start down the road of trouble shooting the problem.  I test other wireless routers and all that I came across worked just fine, but not my Netgear RangeMax router.  So I Googled W002 – Wi-Fi Connection Failed and the first page I found listed out all the Wifi/UMA Error Codes that Blackberry’s can get .  I started following the instructions for W002 to troubleshoot the problem, but didn’t have any luck.

Next, I called T-Mobile’s (Works with AT&T also) Hot line for blackberry support.  If you have had a Blackberry with T-Mobile over the years, you might have run across this direct number.  It’s great, an actual customer service agent answers the line and they start right into helping you.  Unfortunately, after years of owning a Blackberry, you know right-a-way you need level 2 support because you have already done everything the first tech is going to take you through.  So they pushed me to level 2 and level 2 pushed me to Blackberry Support. Wow, now I was talking with someone from Blackberry named Jesus in Texas.  He spent several hours on the phone with me leaving me with the same problem that I called with.  But we sure did re-work that Blackberry which gave me more knowledge of how they work, so I didn’t mind it too much.

My next step was to call Netgear.  I reached Ryan, agent #3228 in the Philippines after a few menu choices.  Ryan took me through the following configuration changes: switch to Channel 11, set Mode to b and g, and turn off WEP. Bingo, the Blackberry connected and rolled right over to UMA mode. It was great but I’m not comfortable in leaving my wireless network unsecured.  So he asks me to try WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES], which is a higher level of encryption and the Blackberry connects right-a-way. Ryan then explains that the software on the Blackberry is more advanced than the older models, so it’s using a higher level of security. Thanks to Ryan, my problem is solved and it only took 15 minutes!

For those of you that don’t know the difference in the wireless security settings that I mentioned above, here are the basics:

TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is a choice between old and new technologies.  Both WPA-PSK [TKIP] and WPA2-PSK [AES] offer good security, but WPA is theoretically breakable and WPA2 with a strong password can withstand an attack for years.

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is the oldest (1999) Wi-Fi protection standard and can be cracked in a matter of minutes these days.

UPDATE: If Wi-Fi goes out on your Blackberry pull the battery out and wait 10 seconds before putting it back in.  Your connection should come back right a way.

UPDATE: I switched to a Linksys WRT160N router and it has fixed all of my problems. Especially with the signal dropping.

Thank you so much for posting this. My BB Curve 8320 would recognize my Netgear WNR2000 fine, but would never shift to UMA. I wanted to use my wifi connection because my cell reception is so poor in my home. I didn't do exactly what you advised, but rather changed the security settings to WPA-PSK, auto channel, mode up to 300 mbps. I then manually added the network on my BB, wifi preferred (or even wifi only), and UMA immediately came up with a good wifi connection. I saw a related post that advised editing the wifi profile to allow inter-access point handover, which is supposed to minimize dropped calls and problems with pcs accessing the wifi at the same time. I have absolutely no understanding of what this all means, but it seems to work. So thanks.

Thanks for posting this! I pretty much went through the same thing but only dealt with Blackberry support (who didn't help at all but were quite nice).
Now I'm connected just fine to UMA but I've been experiencing periodic (maybe 3x/wk) complete loss of wireless signal. My home PC can see the wired connection but my other wireless computers AND my blackberries all lose connection! The only thing that I didn't do that you did was to switch to b/g and channel 11. I'll try this and keep my fingers crossed...

My issue now is that WiFi crashes during a call and reverts back to EDGE. Also, my phone randomly (even with regular batt pulls) will quit rcvg/launching calls. I suspect there is a setting on the RangeMax that will address this. I am using WPA2 security and have never had an issue connecting. I also don't have this issue over LinkSys or with any other network I connect my 8900 Curve to.
  • Jeff9a9, I have the same problem with dropped calls on WiFi with the RangeMax, but it never drops on other WiFi routers. I'm not sure what the fix is here, but I'm going to look into it.

Hi this is one of the best blogs I have ever read, however, I just got the BB 8900 from a friend and i am having the same problem---It connects to the Wifi, and on teh screen it says TMOBILE-Giggle (which is the name of my wifi connection at home) It has the UMA in the right hand corner. Everything is connected.

NOW when i go to the browser it says : A web 2 go plan is required, upsell NOW. WTH is going on? I was on the phone with TMOBILE tech support for 2 hours and they could not help me, they cleary told me "if phone is not purchased from tmobile, you DO NOT have to have the data plan to use the WIFI, can anyone help me as to why i keep getting this msg? I have all the setting changed to what the thread said below, but i still can not get on... please HELP... you can email me at maryamkhan04@yahoo.com THANK YOU SOOO MUCH, i paid a lot for this phone so that i could use the wifi w.out getting a data plan (which i can't afford) PLEASE HELP
  • simpletech
You need to change your browser settings. Open Internet Browser, menu click, options, general properties, change default browser to hotspot. It will work as long as you are connected to WIFI. I used mine this way for about 2 months before I finally caved in and bought the data plan. Good luck!
  • I don't think it matters if you didn't purchase the phone from T-Mobile. You are still using their network and they require to you have a data plan in order to access the internet.
  • sleepytexan
where do you go to change to channel 11 and so on, I'm totally lost
can someone tell me how to change these things step-by-step
thanks alot and a happy new year
  • Connect your computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router. Open an Internet browser and type the router IP address which would be either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 (Or look at the back of your router to see the default IP address) in the address bar and press Enter. The Login window will be prompting for a Username and Password. The default Username is admin and the default Password is password if you have not changed them (I recommend changing them from the default settings). Click Wireless Settings under the Setup menu. Select the desired channel from the drop-down. Then Click Apply and you are done.

Could you please help me. I just got my Blackberry yesterday and since havn't been able to reveive or send texts or phonecalls, i tried setting up the wireless connection and i inserted the WEP key (i am using a netgear internet connection) and it then goes on to tell me that it failed to obtain an IP address. What should i do? Thankss
  • You need to use a higher level of encryption with the router than WEP. Try WPA-PSK [TKIP] and WPA2-PSK [AES].
  • Hello,

Can you help me? I have run out of ideas! I have a BB Curve 8900 on Orange in the UK. I recently lost UMA on my BB, no idea why.

I have exchanged emails with Netgear with no joy, spoken to Orange who suggested a software update which killed my phone (I have just received a brand new one - still no UMA!)

What on earth is going on? Help.....please!
  • Simon, have you tired the suggestion above? It's important to use a higher level of encryption with the router.
  • Nathan
Wow, thank you so much for this post. I have an 8900 on AT&T and couldn't get my wifi to work at home, even though it worked fine everywhere else - no error message, said it was connected, but didn't work. Changed to channel 11 (already using wpa2 - AES) and, presto! it's working:D. Thank you again for sharing your experience with the rest of us.

I just got my first blackberry and am having the exact same problem. It's the same with me, I nave no problem connecting any of my other devices to the netgear but the blackberry curve 8900 gives me that same error message... now my problem..I don't know how to change the settings on my router. How exactly did you do this?? If you could email me with an answer, I would be so thankful. Please help me, I really like my new phone, but I don't have the data plan, so if I can't get it to connect, then I'm going to have to return it soon. Thank you for your time.

  • mo55
i have the curve 8900...but i have been unable to change the channel to 11.....how may i do that? can u please explain with details?
  • simpletech
This is not done on the BB itself. You need to access your routers configuration page. It depends what kind of router you have. Linksys and many others are http://192.168.1.1 . Netgear can be accessed by typing www.routerlogin.net , others are http://10.0.0.1 , and 2wire routers/gateways are usually http://192.168.1.254. You must then enter a username and password to access it. Again, these are all different depending on make and model of the router. It would be best to Google your router for login information, unless you have changed the default username and password.

Once you have figured all that out, then you can change your channel. It will usually be located under wireless setup, or basic wireless. Good luck!
  • niranjan
hi thats great info...i followed your steps and things were looking good but when i connect to the wireless it shows an active connection but i'm not able to browse anything and when i do a diagnostics: under blackberry infrastructure Connecting : it shows a cross mark....any suggestions how do i connect my 8900
  • simple_tech
Also wanted to let everyone know an easier way to do a battery pull. We all know what a pain it is to get the protective case off just to pull the battery.

If you hold the (left)alt key , the (right)aA^ key , and the del key all at the same time (about 3 seconds) it will reset the BB. No battery pull needed.
  • simple_tech
For those wanting to use the home wifi only for internet (without data plan), make sure to change your browser to hotspot. If you leave it on internet browser it will only use your carrier connection. Go to options>advanced>browser and change default browser configuration to hotspot.

Hello, I also have a TMobile BB8900 and they told me that I could do the wifi calls from international locations back to the USA by simple shutting off the cell tower connection and using my wifi to make the call...I do this and have full wifi capabilities on my phone to scan the internet and what not but when i got to make a phone call it tells me call failed... THis is killing my ability to stay in touch with friends and family back in the USA as well as hurting my ability to stay in touch as I set up my business between the USA and Spain... PLEASE SOMEONE Know what i can do? I need this resolved ASAP and i just spent 1.5 hours with tmobile online support and they didnt have any clue.. I dont even get the UMA symbol to pop up.....

Hope to here from someone soon...

    THanks
  • Great info. I have a 8900 curve from t-mobile as well. I can connect fine from my linksys at home but when I go to other wifi locations the uma will not pop up on my phone. It worked at one of these spots then just stopped working there. It is getting the signal or something since it puts its name on my phone but I get no data exchange. Can't do anything. I deleted the profile for it and then added it again and also removed the battery. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.
  • Thomas
This could be the same problem that you are experiencing at home. Unfortunately you can not change the other locations wifi settings. I have that problem from time to time as well.
  • i'm have the same problem... I too have a Netgear rangemax router. UMA on my 8900 works fine but when a cell call comes in my entire wireless network goes out. I have to then rest my router.
  • jack
hi, i have a 8900. but i was still not able to change the channel to 11. how may i do that? thanks!
  • Thomas
Go to our Wireless Settings and then look under Wireless Network. You should be able to change your channel there.
  • gloria
dont quite understand. dont know about any of this but tmobile cant help me with my wifi.
  • Dave
WOW! I was amazed to find this blog that described my EXACT problem, down to the same router. I will try out your suggestions and hopefully this will work for me. I recently dropped my data plan w/ T-mobile and intend to use my home WiFi on my BB. The help desk at T-mobile says I can do that, but as of yet, I've been unsuccessful. Keeping my fingers crossed ...
  • Luis
WOW! Thanks a lot!!!! I spent around 2 hours trying to resolve this issue, until I read your article. I was kind of upset with my BB WIFI. It wasn't working all times. Now is working perfectly!!! Again thanks, thanks, thanks!!!!
  • adriana
Hello, thanks for the help, it works perfectly for me!! XD
  • Tony
Hey, thanks for the help. Did you have specific settings on your phone? Because I seem to still have the problem of not being able to stay connected to WIFI/UMA for long periods of time. Sometimes the logo still displays UMA and WIFI, but my phone shows no connectivity, and that actually prevents my phone from receiving any outside calls. I had to turn off WIFI and UMA to start receiving calls again. Any idea on how to fix this problem?

Also, when ever my phone turns off the screen, i find that it also disconnects from WIFI/UMA, and when i click on the keyboard again, the phone connects right back in a couple of seconds. What is the problem with this?

    thanks.
    thanks so much.
  • Thomas
No settings for the phone. It sounds like you might want to upgrade the handhelds software or re-install it.
  • Hey, I just purchased the 8900 as well and have a netgear Rangemax router. I am computer savvy, however, routers a little foreign to me. If i want to change these settings where do i go? Do I pop in the CD and look for a 'router settings' button or what? As soon as i can be directed to the page with all the settings I should be okay, i was just wondering how to get the settings up onto my computer to alter. Thanks! By the way this is probably the most help ive ever gotten on this matter, and like you, ive talked to t-mobile and netgear constantly for the past week!
  • Thomas
Look on the back of your router and it should say routerlogin.net with a username and password.
  • Hi all,

    this was great help thanks,
i have a 8900 curve and i can connect to any network, but seems as if the blackberry is still using my service provider to download vids and emails and other content.

    any help,

    thanks in advance
  • Thomas
Is it switch over to the UMA mode?
  • 3 days I have been working on this....THANK YOU VERY MUCH....worked right away!
  • Keith

Most valuable information. Thank you. Found your blog on Twitter!
  • Taryn
    Thanks!

b and g mode is the wireless mode of your router. This specifies which mode a wireless client such as a blackberry or laptop and a base station your router will connect by. You can connect through (802.11) b and g on your Blackberry.
  • Taryn
Thanks so much! I really needed this help. Just one question. I switched my WEP off (it's always off anyway) and changed to channel 11 but what does switch to b and g mode mean?
  • chris
Thanks for the info. Now my Curve 8900 works great....I had spent a lot of time trying to fix. Then 2 changes and 2 mins and it works perfect. Thanks.
  • Autumn
Thanks so much for this post!! I have been working with tmobile for a couple of days trying to solve this problem and after reading this it only took me 3 minutes to get connected!
